Letter from the Editor: Best of 2011 – The Pulse of the Business Process Expert Community on SCN
We just wrapped up 2011; it's time to take a look back and see what captured the community's interest.

Front runners were items about skills and career development as an SAP professional.
Next on the list came anything to do with SAP HANA. If you haven't already done so, be sure to Experience SAP HANA for demos.
Business process management and modeling topics continued to be popular, with an excerpt from the book Applying Real-World BPM in an SAP Environment topping the charts.
Process Orchestration debuted at SAP TechEd and garnered a lot of interest in the newsletter as well.
Rounding out the field were some tried and true enterprise resource planning themes such as Human Capital Management (HCM).

The BPX Community also launched two new areas: SAP Business ByDesign and Cloud and OnDemand, which generated non-stop discussions in forums, blogs, and in-person events. Read SCN Senior VP Mark Yolton's welcome message to the cloud community, which covers offerings such as SAP BI on-demand, SAP Business ByDesign, SAP Streamwork, Sales On-Demand, and Sourcing On-Demand. In 2011, SAP also launched the SAP Cloud Computing Newsletter and announced its intention to acquire Success Factors.

Looking ahead, the community can expect more great things. First and foremost, the New SCN will provide simple, advanced, and powerful features to our members. Read the blog, The New SCN - Launch Now Planned for Early 2012. For in-depth details on the project launch, also see this follow-up blog from Mark Yolton. See you soon on the New SCN!

Sincerely,

Audrey Stevenson,
Senior Editor, BPX Community

  1. A Year for Career Focus: SAP Experts and Happy SAP Business Consultants

What makes an SAP expert? SAP Mentor and HCM Consultant Jarret Pazahanick offers some guidelines in his blog Ten Ways to Tell if You're an SAP Expert, which sparked some debate about people and companies who make that claim. Thierry Crifasi of Bluefin Solutions, in his blog Will Modeling Overtake Coding? I'm a Happy SAP Business Consultant, talks about how modeling tools such as SAP NetWeaver Business Process Management have become pervasive in SAP implementation projects, leading to a redistribution of roles between SAP business consultants and technical consultants.

  2. 2011 Brings General Availability of SAP HANA to Customers Worldwide

We announced the general availability of SAP HANA appliance software to customers in 2011, heralding a new generation of analytics, business applications, and IT simplification with SAP in-memory computing technology. Check out SCN's in-memory community, listen to this podcast from SAP Mentor Jon Reed, and take a look at SAP Mentor Jamie Oswald's blog: SAP HANA – Remove the Shackles of Terrible Data Design. If you're looking for trends and expert opinions on in-memory computing, check out this research report conducted by CIO Magazine and a webcast replay with SAP and HP executives. "HANA... is at the heart of SAP's renewal and is core to everything we are working on," says SAP Executive Board member Vishal Sikka. Read Vishal's blog and find out how SAP customers use HANA today.

  3. Focus on Integration with SAP NetWeaver Business Process Management

Of great interest in 2011 was this SAP TechEd 2011 session recorded in Las Vegas: iPad, Adobe, Android – UI Technologies to Integrate in SAP NetWeaver BPM. See how to integrate UI technologies and devices, such as iPad and BlackBerry, into SAP NW BPM processes, based on several demos and use cases. Then check out this blog by SAP Mentor Rukhshaan Omar to find out how the SAP IT Transformation Services team used SAP NW BPM to automate the investment decision and expenditure process at SAP. For more on SAP NW BPM, see this SAP TechEd Online lecture: Overview of SAP NW BPM and SAP NW BRM.

  4. Business Process Modeling and Execution Draw Lots of Interest

Ann Rosenberg, SAP Mentor and Global Business Process Management Lead, published an excerpt of the book Applying Real-World BPM in an SAP Environment, about real-world business process management in an SAP project. Read parts of five chapters on topics like business model management; real-life use cases from Ericsson and Braskem; the new methodology and governance (ASAP 7); and BPM tools – from modeling to execution. For another view on modeling business processes, read the blog series on Case Management Process Modeling (CMPM) by Joern Franke of the SAP Research team. See part 1, part 2, and part 3.

  5. New in 2011: SAP NetWeaver Process Orchestration

Mariana Mihaylova of SAP covers the release of SAP NetWeaver Process Orchestration at SAP TechEd Las Vegas in this blog. Customers using SAP NetWeaver Process Orchestration can achieve business differentiation by extending their SAP Business Suite and other applications. Stay tuned for much more on process orchestration in the year ahead. And be sure to check out all the online sessions at SAP TechEd Online. Big Picture Process Orchestration From an Application Point of View highlights use-cases focusing on process modeling, blueprinting and configuration, process extensibility and flexibility, process automation and workflow, E2E process monitoring, and analytics.

  6. Always Trending: Enterprise Resource Planning Topics

In The Future of SAP HCM, SAP Mentor Jarret Pazahanick covers a new podcast series, which looks at what the future holds for SAP Human Capital Management (HCM) customers and consultants. Some highlights include understanding the underlying HR business processes as well as the impact of SAP HANA on HCM and technical changes within SAP HCM. For more on Human Resources, check out Streamline Your HR and Payroll Processes with Business ByDesign by Judson Wickham of Pinkberry, in which he demonstrates how he eliminated double entry at Pinkberry and made the payroll process more efficient.
