I’m very excited about 2012. In the two months since I started as the Community Growth Hacker at SourceForge, I don’t think I’ve stopped running the whole time, and there are even more things to do in 2012.

Let’s start with the January Project Of The Month.

The HyperSQL Database Engine is a database engine written in Java, to be used embedded in Java applications, or as a stand-alone DB to be used via JDBC. The design philosophy is to make it as self-contained as possible, not relying on any third-party libraries, so that it’s easy to drop into your project without adding a bunch of dependencies.

In a departure from how we’ve done the POTM page in the past, I had a short chat with two of the lead developers of the project, rather than just sending them a questionnaire, so the result is a less formal overview of the project and its origins, as well as a little insight into why they’re working on this. You can listen to the interview, or read the transcript, at the URL above.

Be sure to subscribe to our podcast, so you don’t miss my interviews with other projects in the months to come.

VOTE for the February Project Of The Month

In an attempt to have the selection of the Project Of The Month more accurately reflect the views of our community, we’re going to try out a new way to select the POTM. We’ll select the top candidates based on activity and growth in the preceding month, and then ask you, the SourceForge community, to select the winner via an online poll. If this seems to work out, we’ll move to this method permanently. Vote at http://twtpoll.com/7vt4lq  You can see more detailed descriptions of the candidate projects below, in the Fastest Growing Projects section of this mailing, or on the SourceForge blog.

Statistics
In the month of December:
November ended with 322,259 projects, and December ended with 327,423, for a total growth of 5,164 projects.
We added 42,519 new users in December, for a total of 3,472,808.

In December we started The Anvil Podcast for SourceForge projects. In the podcast, I’m interviewing developers from projects and asking them to describe what their project does, and where other people can get involved.
So far, we have six episodes on the website, which you can see in the ‘podcast’ category on the blog. So far, we have:

About Writing News Items
I’ve been retweeting news items about releases that you post to the news section of your projects. I dig through the list of your news items every day looking for releases. There are several ways that you could make my job easier for me, and at the same time make your news items more useful both to your project and to third-party news sites that wish to republish them.

  • Put the project name in the subject. That is, instead of saying “Version 2.3 released”, say “FlightICS releases version 2.3”. This makes it easier for news outlets to republish your news item.
  • Put a one sentence project description in the body. (Yes, every time.) This saves a news outlet time looking up what your project is, and increases the chance that they’ll pick up the story.
  • Put the URL of your news page in the body. This may seem redundant, but ensures that when the story appears somewhere else, they can still get back to your site. Provide a one-paragraph summary that is 140 characters or less. Being able to post your story on Twitter with no additional effort increases the chance that your story will spread.
